Euro 2024: It’s our task to let the fans keep dreaming – Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann feels it is their task to let the fans keep dreaming after their 2-0 win against Hungary in their second match of the ongoing Euro 2024 at Stuttgart on Wednesday. The hosts registered a convincing 5-1 win against Scotland earlier in the tournament.

21-year-old Jamal Musiala scored at the half-way stage of the opening half to put Germany in front against Hungary. Germany’s captain Ílkay Gündogan fought for the ball and Musiala was able to capitalise after Hungary’s defence failed to clear the ball.

Ílkay Gündogan then scored the second goal after he came up with a cool finish in the second half to put the game to bed. On the other hand, Hungary too had their chances to draw level but they could not grab them.

“It was very loud in the stadium — that just gives you a good feeling,” the Germany coach said. “That helps us, which is hard to believe because we have such incredibly experienced and successful players but it does something with you. It moves you.”

“It’s our task to let the fans keep dreaming.”

Meanwhile, Musiala was able to impress one and all with his game and looked threatening everytime he had the ball at his feet. Nagelsmann showered praise on the youngster for making a positive impact on the game.

“He should just play like he’s on a small pitch anywhere in Germany or England, it doesn’t matter,” Nagelsmann said. “He should just play football with his friends. He shouldn’t think about the pressure, he’s just brilliant playing football.”

Germany haven’t been at their best in the big events in the recent past and they will be eyeing their fourth Euro championship.

“We are getting better, but as we improve we have to overcome some problems,” said Germany captain Gündogan. “That is what this game showed today, especially in the first half, but that’s the tournament — you have survive such situations. We survived and then hit back.

“I wanted to remain patient, to complete my tasks without taking myself too seriously. The more often you train together, the better the feeling for your team mates as well – the feeling gets better with the lads around me.”

Germany will next take on Switzerland on Sunday.
