Chelsea duo Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell have been asked to self-isolate till June 28th as there is a fear that they came in close contact with fellow club teammate Billy Gilmour after the side’s 0-0 draw against Scotland on Friday.
The much-anticipated match between both traditional rivals ended up as a disappointing one for England as they failed to create many chances and had to settle for a point. Billy Gilmour, who started for the time in his fledgling Scotland career, was awarded man of the match for his brilliant display.
However, after the match it was reported that Billy Gilmour had contracted COVID 19 and was ruled out for Scotland until further notice. A couple of English players were also asked to self-isolate as they had come in contact with the midfielder.
“We can confirm that Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount must isolate up to and including next Monday (28 June). This decision has been taken in consultation with Public Health England,” the English Football Association said in a statement.
England have now defeated Czech Republic after Raheem Sterling scored his second goal of the tournament to ensure their status as the top team of their group. This means that England will face the 2nd place team of Group F on June 29th. As Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell’s isolation period ends on June 28th, they should be in consideration for a place in the team for the round of 16.
“Chilwell and Mount will isolate and train individually in private areas at England’s training base St. George’s Park, with the rest of the squad returning there after tonight’s fixture against Czech Republic at Wembley.
“We will continue to follow all Covid-19 protocols and the UEFA testing regime, while remaining in close contact with PHE.
“The entire England squad and staff had lateral flow tests on Monday and all were again negative, as was the case with Sunday’s UEFA pre-match PCR tests.”
England will have their eyes on tonight’s matches as they will find out their round of 16 opponent.
