Germany’s head coach Joachim Leow played down the big win against the defending champions Portugal by 4-2. Germany defeated the Cristiano Ronaldo-led team as they completely dominated the reigning champions. Kai Havertz and Robin Gosens starred for the German team as they scored a goal each whereas two own goals were scored by Portugal.
However, Joachim Leow is not over excited after a comprehensive win against Portugal. The Germans dominated the possession with 58% and also created more chances than their opening game against the World Champions, France.
Germany were not able to bring their best to the table against France as they couldn’t create enough chances. However, they thoroughly dominated the contest against Portugal.
“Nothing of significance has happened, we have only won a game, but now come further challenges which will be just as testing,” he said.
Leow added that it was a complete performance from his team as they were able to break through Portugal’s defense on a number of occasions.
“It was a very strong performance for us against the technically sound and counter attack-minded Portuguese,” said Loew. “We showed a lot of morale especially after falling behind, did not lose the thread and kept calm. “We overwhelmed Portugal’s defence a few times.”
On the other hand, Germany will have some injury woes as Ilkay Gundogan, Mats Hummels and Gosens all limped off in the second half.
“Hummels’ knee ligament has flared up again, with Robin it was the adductor, Ilkay Gundogan took a blow to the calf,” said Loew. “We didn’t want to take any risks, but I don’t think it’s anything dramatic and if all goes well, it should be okay.”
Germany will next face Hungary on Thursday at Allianz Arena.
