Robin Gosens was the talk of the town after his magnificent performance against Portugal in Germany’s second group game. Germany surprisingly won the game 4-2 with the left wing-back playing a prominent role.
He provided one goal and two assists and was rewarded with a standing ovation when he was subbed off later in the second half.
Robin Gosens is slowly but surely becoming one of the stories of the tournament. He plays his club football for Serie A side Atalanta and is generally deployed on the left-hand side of midfield. He is equally adept at defence and attack and has a wicked left foot.
Joachim Loew has switched to the 3-4-3 formation just to accommodate Robin Gosens as he is too attacking to play as a full back. He has been a maverick for them so far and will be an important weapon for them going forward. He was awarded the man of the match award for his outing against Portugal.
“Should I take that thing with me or what?” he asked after being singled out for his performance in the 4-2 victory over defending champion Portugal on Saturday.
“It’s gigantic, you can’t put it in words,” said Gosens, who scored one goal and was involved in setting up two more in Saturday’s game. “If you look back on my career or the way I’ve gone, I think it’s simply indescribable and will stay in the memory forever. It’s definitely an evening I’ll never forget.”
Gasperini demands a lot from his players in a 3-4-3 formation, where the tireless Gosens has thrived as a left back or winger. Much like his Atalanta coach, Joachim Loew is also a big fan of Gosens’ ability to play in the 3-4-3 setup.
“We value him in the team and as coaches very much because he’s very, very open, very active in communication,” Löw said. “He has a very good relationship with all the players, is somehow clear in his head, very straightforward.
“He is a guy like the game he plays, everything with clear lines, throw everything into the balance, the way he plays with unbridled commitment, and fights for things that are important to him.”
