Finland’s midfielder Joni Kauko has signed a contract with previous season Hero Indian Super League runners-up ATK Mohun Bagan. The 30-year-old penned the deal on Thursday after his national team finished third in Group stage and exited Euro 2020.
In fact, it is noticed in the history of the ISL that not many players have signed with an Indian club just after playing in the European Championships. Kauko played all the three matches for Finland as they made a fine start to Euro 2020 by beating Denmark in the opening fixture. However, the Finnish team lost to Russia and Belgium in their next two games.
The midfielder played in four different age groups before playing for the national team. The 30-year old played for Denmark’s club Esbjerg and has scored many goals in club football.
The next assignment for ATK Mohun Bagan is the AFC Cup and Joni Kauko will be available for the tournament. There is no doubt that Kauko will add strength to midifield of Mariners and he will look to deliver the goods for the club with the help of his experience.
Kauko also gave a message to Bagan’s fans, “Hello Mariners. This is Joni Kauko. Greetings from Finland. I am really excited to join the historic club, ATK Mohun Bagan. I am looking forward to learning about the fascinating culture of India. So see you soon, Mariners. Take care,” he said.
On the other hand, ATK Mohun Bagan were consistent right throughout the previous season and qualified for the final of the Hero ISL but Mumbai City were able to clinch the tournament as they won by 2-1. Thus, Antonio Lopez Habas will look to make the most of Kauko’s experience and get the best out of him.
