Portugal legend Cristiano Ronaldo scored a late brace against Hungary which made him the all-time highest goal scorer at the European Championships. Ronaldo was tied with Michel Platini on nine goals, but finally overtook the Frenchman after he slotted home a penalty to double Portugal’s lead.
Portugal defeated Hungary 3-0 in a match where Hungary will feel they deserved a point. Portugal were unable to break down Hungary’s stubborn defence for the first 80 minutes. Hungary were quick on the counter attack and had a goal disallowed in the second half.
Raphael Guerreiro gave Portugal the lead just 5 minutes from the final whistle as he shot deflected off of Willi Orban’s leg. The flood gates were now open and Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals in the final minutes of the match. The first goal was a penalty which had been won by Rafa Silva. The second goal by Ronaldo was created by a string of smart passes by the Portuguese players which was helped in the net by Ronaldo to make it 3-0.
The score line wasn’t a good representation of how the match panned out, but Portugal will be glad they got all three points considering they have to play Germany and France in their next two group matches.
Ronaldo broke Michel Platini’s 37-year-old record. Platini, who appeared in just one Euro tournament, scored an astonishing 9 goals in just 5 matches. In contrast, Ronaldo has now moved up to 11 goals in 22 matches across five European Championships.
In terms of goals per game, Platini trumps any player with more than 5 goals. However, Ronaldo is the all-time highest goal scoring player at the tournament with 11 goals.
This brace took Ronaldo’s tally of international goals to 105, just 4 shy of Ali Daei’s record of 109 goals. He will be hoping to break the record this summer and if he does that, rest assured that Portugal will have a great tournament.
Portugal will face Germany in Munich on Saturday before returning back to Hungary to play their final group game against France.
