FC Goa secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Mohammedan SC in an Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 group-stage encounter at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa on Tuesday. The win solidified Goa’s position near the top of the table, taking them to 48 points from 23 games, with 14 wins and six draws.
More importantly, the Gaurs have now officially booked their spot in the semifinals, bypassing the single-legged eliminator stage alongside Mohun Bagan Super Giant.
From the outset, FC Goa dictated the tempo of the match, holding 56% of possession and maintaining control with an impressive 84% passing accuracy. Their dominance was evident in the attacking statistics as well, with the team registering five shots on target and delivering 20 crosses into the box.
The Gaurs’ intent was clear from the opening whistle, with their quick passing sequences carving open spaces through the heart of the Mohammedan defence. In the sixth minute, winger Boris Singh whipped in a delightful cross to find Rowllin Borges inside the six-yard box. Borges’ header was powerful and on target, but Mohammedan SC goalkeeper Padam Chhetri reacted brilliantly, pulling off a stunning save to deny the early breakthrough.
However, FC Goa’s persistence paid off in the 40th minute through a beautifully orchestrated move led by Dejan Drazic. Operating down the left flank, Drazic showcased superb footwork to beat Alexis Gomez before curling a sumptuous outside-of-the-foot pass into the box. Ayush Dev Chhetri neatly laid it off for Iker Guarrotxena, who made no mistake, guiding a precise header into the top right corner to hand the Gaurs a well-deserved lead.
Drazic continued to be at the heart of Goa’s creative play after the break. Just three minutes into the second half, his corner delivery found Nim Dorjee Tamang unmarked in the box. Tamang connected well, but his header sailed over the crossbar, letting Mohammedan off the hook.
The result was sealed in the 86th minute, courtesy of a fortunate own goal by Mohammedan SC goalkeeper Padam Chhetri. Guarrotxena once again played a key role, rising at the far post to meet a corner with a strong header. The ball ricocheted off Chhetri and found the back of the net, leaving the visitors with no chance of a late comeback.
With this victory, FC Goa’s impressive campaign continues, and they march confidently into the semifinals. Mohammedan SC, on the other hand, will have to regroup quickly as they look to keep their playoff hopes alive.
