FC Goa registered an impressive 2-1 victory over Punjab FC on Wednesday in the Indian Super League (ISL), marking their second consecutive win and pushing them into the league’s top three.
Coming off the momentum of a 3-0 victory against Bengaluru FC just days prior, Goa now sits in third place with 12 points from eight matches, a strong position as the season progresses.
Punjab FC struck first with an early goal by Asmir Sujik in the 13th minute, capitalizing on an opening in Goa’s defense. But Punjab’s lead was short-lived, as FC Goa responded with determination.
In the 22nd minute, Iker Guarrotxena played a vital role by assisting Armando Sadiku, who netted the equalizer with a precise finish. The goal gave FC Goa the confidence boost they needed to regain control of the game.
The first half ended 1-1, with both teams missing chances to break the deadlock. However, Goa returned from the halftime break with renewed energy and strategic adjustments.
Their persistence paid off just four minutes into the second half, when Guarrotxena found himself in the perfect position to score. The Spanish forward made no mistake, striking the ball with his left foot from six yards out to give Goa a 2-1 lead in the 49th minute.
For the remainder of the game, Goa focused on consolidating their lead, while Punjab FC pushed hard to equalize. Despite their best efforts, Punjab struggled to break through Goa’s resilient defense. Both sides battled through intense final minutes, but neither could add to the score, as FC Goa held firm to secure the victory.
Goa’s win not only adds three valuable points to their season tally but also sums up their growing confidence and strong form. After their recent win against previously undefeated Bengaluru FC, Goa looks poised to be a serious contender in the league.
Punjab FC, meanwhile, faces a setback with this result, recording their second loss in six games. Despite their aggressive start, they were ultimately unable to convert opportunities into a comeback, and the defeat leaves them eager for improvement in their upcoming matches.
With two consecutive wins, FC Goa is building momentum and sending a strong message to their ISL rivals. Their impressive performances in recent games have now placed them firmly among the league’s top teams as they look to continue their ascent in the standings.
