Indian Super League (ISL) club FC Goa has secured the permanent signing of seasoned midfielder Rowllin Borges, following his impressive loan stint during the 2023-24 season. Borges has signed a new contract that will keep him with the Gaurs until the end of the 2024-25 season.
Borges’ journey in professional football began with Sporting Clube de Goa and East Bengal FC in the I-League, where he made significant contributions early in his career. Transitioning to the ISL, Borges has played for NorthEast United FC, Mumbai City FC, and most recently, FC Goa, bringing a wealth of experience to each team he joined.
The 2023-24 season was particularly noteworthy for Borges, who delivered one of his best individual performances to date. The 32-year-old midfielder scored five goals in 25 matches, proving to be a vital cog in FC Goa’s midfield. His consistent performances helped the club reach the semi-finals of the Durand Cup and the ISL Cup Playoffs. FC Goa also achieved a commendable third-place finish in the ISL League Stage, trailing just three points behind League-Shield winner Mohun Bagan Super Giant.
FC Goa head coach Manolo Marquez expressed his satisfaction with Borges’ continued association with the club. “Rowllin has been a crucial part of our midfield since his arrival. He is an outstanding midfielder with excellent technical skills. His ability to advance from the second line and score, thanks to his superb shooting, is remarkable. His experience is a valuable asset to the team. Retaining Rowllin is crucial for FC Goa, as his leadership and skill set will play a key role in driving the team’s performance,” Marquez stated in an official club release.
Borges himself shared his enthusiasm about his new contract, highlighting his commitment to the club and its ambitions. “I am overjoyed to continue my journey with FC Goa. Last season was incredible, both for me and the team, and I am grateful for the support from the fans, the coaching staff, and my teammates. Signing a permanent deal with my home state club is a dream come true, and I am committed to contributing to the club’s ambitions and bringing more glory to Goa,” Borges said.
The 2023-24 season saw Borges not only cement his place in FC Goa’s lineup but also emerge as a leader on and off the field. His ability to control the midfield, coupled with his knack for scoring crucial goals, made him an indispensable part of the team. Borges’ five goals in 25 matches underline his offensive capabilities, particularly his ability to score from deep midfield positions, which adds a dynamic element to FC Goa’s attacking play.
His leadership and experience were pivotal in guiding a relatively young squad through a challenging season, culminating in strong performances in both domestic cups and the league. The Gaurs’ semi-final run in the Durand Cup and their third-place finish in the ISL League Stage were significant achievements, with Borges playing a central role in these successes.
By securing Borges on a permanent contract, FC Goa is not only retaining a key player but also signaling its commitment to maintaining and building upon its recent successes. Borges’ presence in the midfield is expected to be a stabilizing factor, as his experience and skill will be crucial in nurturing young talents and guiding the team through the upcoming seasons.
