FC Goa is gearing up for the new ISL 2024-25 campaign with a refreshed squad. The Gaurs, under the leadership of coach Manolo Marquez, displayed an impressive brand of football last season, finishing third in the league with the second-best defensive record.
However, a late-season dip in form saw them lose momentum, particularly after their first defeat at the hands of Mohun Bagan Super Giant on February 14.
The upcoming ISL 2024-25 season brings new challenges for FC Goa as they aim to build on last season’s successes while addressing the shortcomings that emerged towards the end. A significant part of this effort will rely on the contributions of their foreign signings, who have the potential to dictate the club’s fortunes in the upcoming season.
Although the Gaurs had to part ways with their star player Noah Sadaoui, they have brought some really experienced and promising talents to strengthen their squad.
Here’s a closer look at the key foreign players who will be crucial for FC Goa in the 2024-25 season:
Odei Onaindia
Odei Onaindia, the 34-year-old Spanish defender, has been a linchpin in FC Goa’s backline since joining from Hyderabad FC last season. Known for his rock-solid defending, Onaindia’s contribution was pivotal in helping FC Goa achieve the second-best defensive record in the ISL.
His goal-line clearance against Chennaiyin FC was one of the highlights of the season, showing his exceptional defensive instincts. This season, Onaindia will again be expected to form a strong partnership with Indian stalwarts Sandesh Jhingan and Jay Gupta, providing the stability needed for a successful campaign.
Carl McHugh
Carl McHugh brings a wealth of ISL experience to FC Goa’s midfield. The versatile Irishman, who can operate both as a defensive midfielder and a center-back, joined the Gaurs last season after stints with ATK and Mohun Bagan. McHugh played 24 games in the 2023-24 season, where his defensive prowess and ability to break up opposition play were invaluable. His experience and leadership on the field will be crucial as FC Goa navigates the challenges of the new season.
Borja Herrera
Borja Herrera, another Spanish addition to the squad, joined FC Goa from East Bengal FC midway through last season. The attacking midfielder is known for his creativity and play-making abilities, making him a vital cog in Manolo Marquez’s tactical setup. With previous experience at Hyderabad FC and East Bengal, Herrera is well-versed with Indian football and will be expected to provide the creative spark needed to unlock stubborn defenses.
Iker Guarrotxena
Returning to FC Goa after a brief stint with Mumbai City FC, Iker Guarrotxena is a versatile forward who can play both as a winger and a striker. The 31-year-old Spaniard was a key player for FC Goa in the 2022-23 season, where he scored 11 goals in 20 ISL games. His goal-scoring ability and experience make him a valuable asset for the Gaurs as they look to improve their attacking output this season.
Dejan Dražić
Serbian winger Dejan Dražić is one of FC Goa’s most exciting new signings. Known for his pace and dribbling skills, Dražić has the potential to fill the void left by Noah Sadaoui. While this will be his first experience playing in India, Dražić’s dynamic playing style could make him a fan favourite. However, he might need some time to adjust to the new league and conditions.
Armando Sadiku
Perhaps the most high-profile signing for FC Goa this transfer window, Armando Sadiku arrives with a strong reputation from his time at Mohun Bagan Super Giant. The Albanian striker was instrumental for the Mariners last season, scoring eight goals and often delivering in crucial moments. His partnership with Dimi Petratos was one of the highlights of the league. FC Goa will be hoping Sadiku can replicate his goal-scoring form and lead their attack in the 2024-25 season.
As FC Goa prepares for the upcoming season, these foreign signings will play a crucial role in determining the team’s success. The club’s management and fans will be eagerly watching to see how these players integrate and contribute to FC Goa’s quest for glory.
