Bengaluru FC head coach Gerard Zaragoza expressed his contentment despite suffering a 0-1 loss against Mohun Bagan Super Giant at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium, Kolkata in the ongoing Indian Super League 2024-25 on Monday.
The Blues dominated the contest with 63.5% possession but failed to find the back of the net. At the stroke of half-time, Bengaluru FC veteran Sunil Chhetri had a golden opportunity to put his team in front but could not grab it. However, the Mariners scored the only goal when Liston Colaco made a blistering strike from a volley in the 74th minute.
Rahul Bheke also had a chance to equalize in the injury time with a header but he could not keep the ball down.
“Today, I think that we play amazing football. I think that we play European football. We have not watched too many games like this in ISL. We controlled everything. And we had a really, really good chance with Sunil, that normally he scores goals, but we did not score… I think that we were today’s top team,” Gerard Zaragoza said in the post-match press conference.
“We were the team that won six games in a row or five games in a row in September. And also in December, we did really good. The good thing is that January is over. The next match for us is now the 1st of February. It’s time to change, it’s time to think forward,” he added.
The Spaniard added that their first aim is to qualify for the playoffs and secondly, they want to finish the league stage among the top-two teams.
He added, “I think that we need to play six games more. And we have four games from Mohun Bagan SG… We want to play again against them… This season, the first thing that we need to do is to enter the playoffs. The second thing is to try to arrive at the second position. And then, let’s see.”
Bengaluru FC have lost four out of their last five games and they would look to turn a corner. The Blues will next take on the Punjab FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi on Saturday.
