England have struggled to dominate the ongoing Euro 2024 and former Manchester City defender Micah Richards reckons getting an attacking manager in place of Gareth Southgate, could solve the team’s problems.
England struggled against Slovakia in the round of 16 and found themselves trailing by 1-0 for 94 minutes. However, the Three Lions were able to equalize when Jude Bellingham scored with a stunning bicycle kick.
Soon into the extra time, England captain Harry Kane scored from an easy header to put his team in front. Earlier in the tournament, England played a 1-1 draw against Denmark. Furthermore, they played a goalless draw against Slovenia but registered a 1-0 win against Serbia and they have been criticized for their timid performance.
Micah Richards said on Stick to Football podcast, “Get an attacking manager, simple as that really. It is as simple as that, if you get an attacking manager, it changes everything. And that’s no disrespect to the previous England managers, you’ve got to play on the front foot, you’ve got to believe that you can win games that way, the modern football way.”
On the other hand, Gareth Southgate admitted they need to be better in the ongoing Euro to get the desired results.
He said via BBC, “We know we should be better than we’ve been but we’ve ended up with a lot of young players in important positions and trying to solve problems right the way through the four weeks of the camp. But the standout is the way that the players are dealing with it. Their togetherness, their spirit.”
England certainly needs to pull up their socks in the upcoming matches if they are to go all the way. Southgate’s team will next take on Switzerland in the quarterfinal at the Merkul Spiel Arena on Saturday.
