India Stuns Iran 2-1 to Seal AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026 Berth

India produced a spirited comeback to defeat Iran 2-1 at the EKA Arena in Ahmedabad on Sunday, securing qualification for the AFC Under-17 Asian Cup 2026. The victory ensured the Blue Colts reached the continental tournament for the 10th time, adding to previous appearances in 1990, 1996, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2018, and 2023. Their best finishes remain quarterfinal runs in 2002 and 2018.

Coming into the decisive clash, Bibiano Fernandes’ side faced a clear scenario: only a win would be enough to advance. Iran, on the other hand, required just a draw to seal its place in next year’s event. That urgency showed in India’s intensity from the start, though the early breakthrough went the other way.

Iran grabbed the lead in the 19th minute through Amirreza Valipoor, whose clinical finish momentarily silenced the home crowd. Despite falling behind, India stayed composed, pushed higher up the pitch, and created pressure inside the Iranian box. Their persistence paid off in first-half stoppage time when captain Dallalmuon Gangte stepped up to take a crucial penalty. Showing calm beyond his age, he sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to level the score and lift India’s momentum heading into the break.

The second half saw India play with renewed confidence and sharper attacking movement. Just seven minutes after the restart, the match tilted firmly in India’s favour. Gunleiba Wangheirakpam struck a low effort from the edge of the area, and a slight deflection wrong-footed the Iranian keeper, guiding the ball into the net in the 52nd minute. The goal marked India’s first lead of the night and ultimately the decisive moment of the contest.

From there, the Blue Colts showed discipline and maturity, closing down Iran’s attempts to claw back while managing the tempo effectively. Fernandes’ boys displayed a strong defensive structure in the final minutes, ensuring there were no late scares as they held on for a memorable win.

This qualification also adds to a historic milestone for Indian football. India now has four teams heading to Asian Cup competitions next year — the senior women’s team, the U-20 women’s team, the U-17 women’s team, and now the U-17 boys. It marks a proud moment for the sport’s development in the country and underscores the promising depth emerging across age groups.

With this gritty comeback, India has not only earned its spot in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026 but also showcased a new wave of talent capable of competing with the continent’s best.
