ISL 2021-22: I think we deserved to win the match – Bengaluru FC’s Marco Pezzaiuoli

Bengaluru FC’s head coach Marco Pezzaiuoli believes his team deserved to win the match after they were held to a 1-1 draw against FC Goa in the 69th match of the ongoing Hero Indian Super League 2021-22 season at the Athletic Stadium, Bambolim on Sunday.

Bengaluru FC had 45% of the ball while they took a total of three shots on target, which was one more than the opponent.

Meanwhile, Dylan Fox scored the opening goal for FC Goa as he found the back of the net in the 41st minute. However, the Blues bounced back as Sunil Chhetri scored his maiden goal of the season to help his team equalize.

When asked whether a 1-1 draw was a fair result, Pezzaiuoli said in the post-match press conference, “I don’t think so. With the chances that we had today, we deserved to win. I think we hit the bar, we had a chance for Cleiton Silva in the first half. We had a lot of chances today but we didn’t win”.

Pezzaiuoli revealed he had a feeling that Chhetri will score and thus decided to start with him. The German manager added that it was an imperative goal for the team as it helped them share the spoils.

He added, “Today I decided to start him as I had a feeling he would score. Again it’s not about Chhetri. I’m happy for him that he scored, he would be happy too but it was an important goal for the team. He also had a second chance to score as he hit the bar. In the end though it’s all about the team”.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru FC has been unbeaten in their last six matches. However, they have managed only three wins in their 12 matches. Pezzaiuoli added that his team needs to convert the draws into wins.

Bengaluru FC head coach added, “We won the last match against Mumbai City FC. We also need to be realistic. We stayed ten days in the room and had two training sessions. There were five players on the bench today who came out of quarantine in the afternoon. So we need to be really happy how they played and how much effort they put in to win the game. There were some players with heavy legs but they continued and continued to play football. I think we deserved to win the game in the end”.

Bengaluru FC will next face Chennaiyin FC on Wednesday at the Athletic Stadium, Bambolim.
