NorthEast United FC have reportedly completed the signing of Danish International Michael Jakobsen ahead of the ninth season of the Hero Indian Super League 2022-23. The 36-year-old veteran last played in the Australian league (A-league) for Adelaide United.
“NorthEast United has completed all the formalities for the signing of Danish defender Michael Jakobsen. He is expected to join the team in Guwahati very soon,” a source close to developments told Khel Now.
Meanwhile, Michael Jakobsen started his football career with Dutch side PSV and impressed with his performances. Subsequently, he signed for his home team Aalborg BK.
During his five-year stint with Aalborg BK, Jakobsen made 169 appearances, scoring 18 goals. He also scored a goal against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League, which got him a lot of spotlight.
After that, Jakobsen played 50 matches for the Spanish club UD Almeria including 16 in the La Liga.
In 2012, he once again moved back to his own country to sign up with FC Copenhagen but could only play 11 matches for the club. In 2018, Jakobsen made a deal with Adelaide United and played 94 matches during his four-year tenure. He also scored one goal for the Australian club.
Meanwhile, NorthEast United FC have roped in midfielders like Jithin MS and Emil Benny from I-League champions Gokulam Kerala FC. Furthermore, they have signed the services of goalkeeper Arindam Bhattacharja.
On the other hand, NorthEast United FC had a disappointing previous season in the tournament as they could only manage three wins in 20 league stage matches.
They finished at 10th place after only bagging 14 points and the club will be determined to turn the tables in the ninth edition of the Hero ISL. Thus, the Highlanders will be determined to turn the tables in the upcoming season of the tournament.
