Hyderabad FC held Mumbai City FC to a goalless draw at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 on Wednesday, as both sides missed crucial chances to break the deadlock.
The draw saw Mumbai City FC climb to fifth place with 32 points from 21 games, while Hyderabad FC, now unbeaten in five consecutive home fixtures (W2 D3), sit with 17 points from as many matches.
Mumbai started the game on the front foot, nearly taking the lead in the ninth minute when Jon Toral split the Hyderabad defense with a precise pass to Lallianzuala Chhangte. The winger charged into the left side of the box but saw his left-footed strike crash off the woodwork, letting Hyderabad off the hook.
The hosts responded with their best opportunity in the 36th minute. Ramhlunchhunga unleashed an ambitious long-range effort, aiming for the top left corner. However, Mumbai goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa was alert, pulling off a fine save to keep the scoreline intact.
As the game progressed, Mumbai adopted a more cautious approach, absorbing pressure and relying on quick counter-attacks. One such break in the 83rd minute saw Chhangte once again in a promising position after a well-coordinated move by the Islanders. Yet, his final shot drifted wide of the left post, summing up a frustrating night for the visitors.
“Both teams fought hard, but the finishing touch was missing,” said Hyderabad FC’s head coach after the match. “We’re proud of our defensive resilience and unbeaten home run.”
Mumbai City FC, under coach Petr Kratky, will now turn their attention to their upcoming home fixture against Mohun Bagan Super Giant on March 1. Meanwhile, Hyderabad FC will travel to Kolkata to face East Bengal FC on February 26.
With the season reaching its final stages, both teams will need to capitalize on their remaining fixtures to secure favourable positions in the playoff race.
