Jamshedpur FC moved one step closer to securing an Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 playoff berth with a commanding 2-0 victory over Mohammedan Sporting SC at the Kishore Bharati Stadium on Thursday. Goals from Ritwik Das and substitute Nikhil Barla sealed the win, keeping Jamshedpur firmly in third place with 37 points from 21 matches.
Ritwik Das, making his return from injury, wasted no time making an impact. In the sixth minute, Javi Hernandes’ side-volley forced a save from Mohammedan Sporting goalkeeper Padam Chettri, but the rebound fell kindly to Ritwik, who calmly slotted home to give Jamshedpur an early lead.
Despite creating several chances, Jamshedpur couldn’t extend their advantage in the first half, with their finishing lacking precision. Mohammedan Sporting, desperate to escape the bottom of the table, showed more intent after the break but struggled to convert their attacking moves into clear-cut opportunities.
Jamshedpur head coach Khalid Jamil made strategic substitutions in the final stages, a decision that paid off handsomely. In the 82nd minute, Nikhil Barla, coming off the bench, latched onto a well-timed assist from Imran Khan to double Jamshedpur’s lead and put the result beyond doubt.
The victory all but guarantees Jamshedpur a playoff spot, as they sit comfortably in third place, while Mohammedan Sporting’s woes continue. The Kolkata-based side suffered its 14th defeat in 21 matches, remaining anchored at the bottom of the 13-team table with just 11 points.
With only a few matches left in the regular season, Jamshedpur will look to maintain their momentum, while Mohammedan Sporting faces an uphill battle to salvage pride.
