ISL – Igor Angulo motivated to win titles with Mumbai City FC

Mumbai City FC newly signed striker Igor Angulo is motivated to win titles with the defending champions of the Hero Indian Super League. Igor Angulo, who was the Golden Boot Winner with FC Goa, had pipped Roy Krishna for the award in the previous season. The Spanish international scored 14 goals in the previous edition of Hero ISL.

The Spaniard stated that it was an easy decision for him to move to Mumbai City FC as he wants to play with and against the best players in Asia and playing for Mumbai will certainly give him that opportunity.

“It was easy to choose Mumbai City FC. They are the current champions of the league [stage], of the play-off [semi-finals and the final]. They are playing in the AFC Champions League next season. It’s a big motivation for me to join this club with the highest ambitions in the Hero ISL,” Angulo said on the latest episode of Football United.

In fact, Angulo played for the Gaurs in the AFC Champions League earlier in the year and as Mumbai will also take part in Asia’s biggest football event, it played a key role in his move from FC Goa to Mumbai City FC.

“That’s a fantastic motivation for me. At the end of the day, everyone wants to face the best clubs in Asia, best players in Asia,” Angulo said.

It is well said in sporting terms that it is difficult to reach the top but it is even more difficult to stay there. Angulo feels the pressure will be on Mumbai City FC to keep up the performances.

“…It’s difficult to reach the target but to maintain that level [after you have achieved it] is super difficult. So, of course the pressure will be on us. But it’s natural. Even as a striker, there is more pressure on you; you are under pressure to score goals in all games. I like being under pressure. I perform better under pressure,” he said.

Angulo added that he wants to contribute to the team’s success and personal milestones don’t matter to him much. The Spaniard feels it will be nice if he can once again win the Golden Boot award in the ISL.

“The race for the Golden Boot will be very tough. Not just among the foreigners; the level of Indian players is also very good. But it’s not my main target, my main target is to win the title, win over the players and play an important role [in the team’s success]. Of course, as a striker I want to score goals and win the Golden Boot again. That will be fantastic,” he said.
