Mumbai City FC have started off their Indian Super League campaign with aplomb as they are still unbeaten after three matches and have already faced the reigning champions Hyderabad FC and reigning league winners Jamshedpur FC. One of the reason for their unbeaten record has to be their solid defence and one of the members of that strong defensive unit is Mehtab Singh who has been more than decent for Des Buckingham’s men.
Mehtab Singh has started both of Mumbai City FC’s home games and has been a very reliant player at the back for the Islanders. He was so good that he was awarded the Hero of the match in both of the encounters and now he is ahead of Mourtada Fall in the pecking order for Buckingham.
Mehtab Singh knows that he has to repay his coach’s trust and hence he is giving his best and feels that there is a massive confidence boost for him as he has the trust of Buckingham. “The fact that the coach trusts you gives you a lot of confidence. I have received great support from the team and we are always helping each other so that makes you feel very good,” he shared.
At this point of time, no other player in the ISL has completed more passes than Mehtab Singh. The defender has a passing accuracy of 87.5% and has been crucial for the Islanders. He shares how the coach wants to implement a certain style and has also shared how they have worked very hard in training to bring that to fruition on matchday. “Our style of football is to build up from the back and I think we do it quite well. We have worked a lot on that on the training field because the coach loves to play that way,” he added.
Lastly Mehtab shared that it has always been his dream to represent India and he comes from a village in Punjab where people believe that they can represent the nation in sports so he also has that belief and with performances like this, he will soon be in the reckoning. “It is very difficult to say if I will get a chance (to play with the national team) but it has always been my dream to play for India. I come from a village in Punjab where anyone who plays sport does it so that they can play for the country one day. So I want to do the same,” the defender concluded.
