Kerala Blasters marked their return to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium with a goalless draw against Mumbai City FC in their Indian Super League (ISL) home opener on Sunday, as missed opportunities and impressive goalkeeping denied both teams a victory.
The match witnessed the much-awaited return of the Yellow Army, with thousands of passionate supporters filling the stadium in yellow and creating an electric atmosphere.
After a disappointing previous season in which the players rarely experienced such overwhelming home support, the Blasters faithful made their presence felt well before kick-off. Their chants and cheers continued throughout the contest, providing encouragement to the home side.
However, despite the lively atmosphere and several promising attacking moves, neither team managed to find the back of the net.
Kerala Blasters entered the fixture hoping to recover from their heavy 4-1 defeat against NorthEast United in their previous match. Head coach Ashley Westwood was eager to secure three points in front of the home supporters, but his team struggled to convert its opportunities.
The hosts nearly made a dream start in the fifth minute when Mohammed Sanan used his pace to break past the Mumbai City defence down the left flank.
Sanan delivered an excellent cross into the penalty area, finding Adrian Luna in a promising position. However, the Uruguayan midfielder’s diving header went wide, wasting an early opportunity to put Kerala ahead.
That missed chance set the tone for the remainder of the contest, with both sides producing dangerous attacking moves but failing to deliver the finishing touch.
While the forwards struggled in front of goal, the defenders and goalkeepers played important roles in keeping the scoreline unchanged.
Kerala Blasters goalkeeper Amrinder Singh produced crucial saves to frustrate Mumbai City’s attackers, while his opposite number, T.P. Rehenesh, was equally impressive between the posts.
Both teams showed attacking intent and created opportunities, but strong defensive performances, excellent goalkeeping and poor finishing ensured the deadlock remained unbroken.
Mumbai City head coach Manolo Marquez would likely have been more satisfied with the result, having secured a valuable away point in a challenging atmosphere.
For Westwood, however, the draw represented another frustrating outing as Kerala Blasters failed to bounce back with a victory following their previous defeat.
Although the supporters were denied a goal to celebrate, the return of the Yellow Army provided a memorable backdrop to the fixture.
Kerala Blasters will now look to improve their finishing and turn their attacking opportunities into goals as they seek their first home victory of the campaign.
