Lalrindika Replaces Yadwad in India’s Provisional Squad for June Internationals

Edmund Lalrindika has been called up to replace the medically sidelined Irfan Yadwad in India’s provisional squad for the upcoming international matches in June, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) confirmed on Thursday. The Inter Kashi striker will join the national camp in Kolkata on May 18.

“Forward Edmund Lalrindika will report to the Senior India National Team camp on May 18, in place of Irfan Yadwad, who will be unavailable due to an appendix operation,” the AIFF said in a statement.

Lalrindika, 26, has enjoyed a productive season with Inter Kashi, making 24 appearances across competitions. His four goals and six assists helped the team reach the Super Cup quarterfinals and secure a runner-up finish in the I-League, India’s second-tier football division.

Although Lalrindika made his senior international debut in June 2024 under then-coach Igor Stimac, he has yet to start a match for India. His last appearance came in a 1-1 draw against Malaysia in November 2024. The upcoming fixtures present an opportunity for the forward to stake his claim in new head coach Manolo Márquez’s plans.

India is currently gearing up for a crucial phase in its AFC Asian Cup qualification campaign. After a 10-day training camp in Kolkata, the team will travel to Thailand for a preparatory friendly. The Blue Tigers are aiming to secure a third straight qualification for the continental tournament, a significant milestone in Indian football.

India has been drawn in Group C for the third round of qualifiers, alongside Bangladesh, Hong Kong China, and Singapore. The group remains wide open after both opening matches ended in draws—India and Bangladesh shared the spoils in Shillong, while Singapore and Hong Kong China also finished level in their tie.

Following the friendly, India will play a key away fixture against Hong Kong at the Kai Tak Sports Park in Kowloon City on June 10. The result could prove pivotal in shaping the group’s outcome.

Lalrindika joins a forward line that includes veteran Sunil Chhetri, Manvir Singh, Suhail Ahmad Bhat, and Lallianzuala Chhangte. With Irfan Yadwad recovering post-surgery, Lalrindika will aim to make the most of his national team return and provide attacking depth in what promises to be a tightly contested qualifying campaign.
