Late Goals Sink India U-23 in Narrow 3-2 Defeat to Tajikistan in Friendly Clash

The Indian men’s U-23 team suffered a heartbreaking 2-3 defeat to Tajikistan in an international friendly on Wednesday, despite twice taking the lead at the TALCO Arena in Tursunzoda. The dramatic late collapse came as part of India’s preparations for the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers.

India began the match on the front foot, breaking the deadlock in the 33rd minute through Suhail Ahmed Bhat. The Mohun Bagan Super Giant forward finished off a swift move, timing his run perfectly to meet a low cross from Macarton and slotting the ball past the Tajik goalkeeper with a composed first-time finish.

But the tide began to turn just before the hour mark when India was reduced to ten men. Ayush Dev Chhetri, of FC Goa, was shown a red card, shifting momentum in favor of the hosts. Tajikistan took advantage almost immediately, equalizing in the 59th minute as Ansor Khabibov connected with a delivery from Muso Khakhorov to level the score.

Despite being a man down, the Blue Colts showed resilience. In the 85th minute, they reclaimed the lead through NorthEast United’s Parthib Gogoi. The goal came from a smart interception by Mohammed Aimen, who threaded a through ball to Gogoi. Showing excellent composure, the forward rounded the goalkeeper to make it 2-1.

However, India’s hopes of a memorable away win were dashed in stoppage time. Tajikistan equalized once again when Muhammadiqbol turned in a free-kick delivered by Abubakar Sulaymonov. Moments later, the comeback was complete as Azizboev rose highest to nod in a corner, sending the home fans into celebration and leaving India stunned.

For India, the defeat, though painful, offered valuable lessons ahead of their September qualifiers. Coach and players alike will take heart from the attacking sparks and two well-crafted goals, even as the team rues defensive lapses and the costly red card that shifted the contest’s balance.

The young Blue Colts will look to build on these experiences as they continue their international training matches, focusing on discipline and late-game management to strengthen their bid for qualification in the upcoming AFC U23 Asian Cup.
