Manchester United have asked interim coach Darren Fletcher to take charge in the FA Cup clash against Brighton on Sunday. Fletcher made his Man United’s interim manager debut against Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday and saw his team play a 2-2 draw against the hosts after Ruben Amorim’s sacking.
The club has spoken to candidates, including former coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick, to take up the interim role until the summer. However, the final call is yet to be taken by the management, meaning Fletcher will be in charge for one more game.
“They’ve informed me they’d like to take the team for Sunday,” Fletcher told a news conference at Turf Moor. “There was a feeling that might have been the case from Monday, but we wanted to focus on Burnley.
“But yeah, I’m tasked with leading the team on Sunday, so all my focus and energy goes to that now.”
Benjamin Sesko scored a brace for the Red Devils and Fletcher said they should have won as they had delivered a match-winning performance against Burnley. United dominated the possession with 65% and took a total of 24 shots, including eight on target.
“They put in a performance that should win the match,” Fletcher said. “We created a lot of chances, had 30 shots, goal-line clearances, a disallowed goal.
“If you look at it in those terms, we should win the match.
“It wasn’t perfect; we started slow,” he said. “We scored two fantastic goals. Still lots to work on, but I was really pleased with their efforts.”
United will next take on Brighton in the third round of the FA Cup at Old Trafford on Sunday.
