Mohun Bagan Super Giant secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 at the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday, thanks to a late goal from Manvir Singh.
The Indian forward struck in the 85th minute to hand the home side three crucial points after Chennaiyin had dominated large portions of the contest but failed to convert their chances.
Mohun Bagan began the match with attacking intent as Manvir and Scottish striker Lee Erwin looked to put early pressure on the visitors. However, the hosts struggled to maintain their momentum, allowing Chennaiyin to take control as the first half progressed.
French midfielder Madih Talal played a key role in Chennaiyin’s attacking efforts, creating several opportunities for his teammates. However, Bryson Fernandes, Irfan Yadwad and Namgyal Bhutia were unable to capitalise on his deliveries.
Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith emerged as a crucial figure, producing important saves to keep his team in contention.
The Mariners also faced difficulties due to the absence of injured players Jamie Maclaren, Miguel Figuera and Lalengmawia Ralte. Coach Panagiotis Dilmperis made several midfield adjustments, including changes involving Lallianzuala Chhangte, but the hosts struggled to establish their attacking rhythm.
Chennaiyin continued to threaten after the break, with Brazilian forward Ramon Tanque adding more strength to their frontline.
In the 61st minute, Tanque received a promising pass from Talal inside the penalty area but failed to beat Kaith, who produced another vital stop.
The visitors came even closer in the 77th minute when Nikola Stojanovic fired a powerful left-footed shot towards goal. Kaith reacted brilliantly, getting a touch on the ball to push it onto the crossbar.
Chennaiyin’s missed opportunities eventually proved costly.
With just five minutes remaining, substitute Liston Colaco delivered a dangerous cross from the left flank. Manvir positioned himself perfectly and redirected the ball into the net with his body, giving Mohun Bagan a decisive lead.
Despite Chennaiyin’s impressive attacking display, the hosts held firm during the closing stages to secure the victory.
The result takes Mohun Bagan to six points from three matches, keeping them fifth in the ISL standings.
Meanwhile, Chennaiyin remain on one point after three games, having suffered their second defeat of the campaign. Their only point so far came from a draw against FC Goa in their opening fixture.
For Mohun Bagan, the victory highlighted their ability to grind out results even when struggling to dominate possession and create clear scoring opportunities.
