Manchester United’s young sensation Mason Greenwood has withdrawn his name from contention for the Euro 2020 final squad because of injury.
Though the 19-year-old was included in Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad of 33 players, Manchester United recently announced that due to injury concerns, Greenwood will not be a part of the final squad.
The forward made his international debut for England in September 2020 and will be gutted to miss the European Championship this summer. According to United, Greenwood has been nursing an injury since March and it would be better for the player to take some time off and recover fully.
“Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has withdrawn from the provisional England Euro 2020 squad, in order to recover fully from an underlying injury that also kept him out of the Under-21 European Championship in March,” a club statement read.
“Mason’s club appearances were managed carefully to maintain his availability through the intensive 2020/21 Premier League and Europa League schedules.”
In 52 appearances for the Red Devils in the 2020/21 season, Mason Greenwood scored 12 goals and featured in the Europa League final against Villarreal for 100 minutes.
United, who finished second in the Premier League behind cross-town rivals Manchester City had a sad end to their campaign. They were defeated by Unai Emery’s Villarreal on penalties in the final of the UEFA Europa League.
United also mentioned that a further spell of competitive football could prove to be harmful for Mason Greenwood. “But a further spell of tournament football would not be beneficial and Mason will remain at Manchester United to recuperate and prepare for pre-season training.”
Meanwhile, The Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate has announced his final 26-man squad for the European Championship this month. Despite several doubts, Liverpool’s Trent Alexander Arnold has been included Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Southampton’s James Ward Prowse miss out.
Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire who missed the Europa League final against Villarreal due to ankle ligament injury and Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson who hasn’t played football since February after undergoing groin surgery have been included in the squad and are expected to be key figures in Southgate’s setup.
Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips was also doubtful because of injury but he was recently seen in training and has been included in the final squad.
