Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick admitted the 2-2 draw against Everton feels like a defeat. United had to share the spoils with Everton after Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored a stunning goal in the 96th minute of stoppage time.

Substitute Benjamin Sesko scored in the 88th minute for the Red Devils to give them the lead. But the hosts were able to bounce back to steal a point.

Earlier, Bryan Mbeumo scored in the 47th minute after a goalless first half. However, Tyrique George equalised for the home team and thus in the last 13 minutes, three goals were scored by both teams, with Everton scoring twice.

“We’re bitterly disappointed,” the United boss said. “To be up in the position we were in in the game twice so close to the end and all the work that went into putting us in that position at different stages, to come away like that is not a great feeling.

“It feels like a defeat which is the obvious thing to say at this stage. We have taken a point, we can’t ignore that but it feels like we should have had a lot more.”

United was stunned by Hull City in the opening match of the season and then registered a 5-2 win against Ipswich Town. In their third game of the season, they had to settle for a draw.

“We haven’t started the season that bad, to be honest,” Carrick said speaking on his team’s start. “It’s not that bad. We were that close to coming away with three points today. That’s football. There are little moments we could deal with better but we’ll be fine.”

The former United midfielder showered praise on Marcus Rashford, who was impressive on the left wing.

“He was just feeling a bit of something,” Carrick said of the forward. “He’s done very well. As I said during the week, he’s done really well since he came back. He looked really sharp today and dangerous.

“That final moment didn’t quite drop for him but nevertheless he created really good opportunities and gave us a big threat throughout the game.”

United will next take on Sabah in the UEFA Champions League on Thursday.
