Mohun Bagan Super Giant made a flying start to its Calcutta Football League 2026 Super Six campaign, producing a dominant first-half display to beat Coal India 5-1 at the Mohun Bagan Ground on Thursday.
The Mariners effectively wrapped up the contest before the break, racing into a 5-0 lead by half-time. Manvir Singh led the scoring with two goals, while Sahal Abdul Samad, Sandeep Malik and Kiyan Nassiri also got their names on the scoresheet.
Mohun Bagan fielded a strong starting lineup featuring several players with Indian Super League first-team experience. Along with Manvir and Sahal, Liston Colaco, captain Subhasish Bose and Deepak Tangri were included in the XI.
The difference in experience and quality quickly showed as the home side took control of proceedings. Coal India struggled to contain the Mariners’ attacking threat, with five goals in the opening 45 minutes putting the result beyond serious doubt.
Manvir was at the heart of the first-half charge with his brace, while Sahal added another goal to an impressive individual outing. Malik and Nassiri completed the scoring spree as Mohun Bagan established a commanding advantage heading into the interval.
Coal India managed to prevent further damage after the restart and eventually found a consolation goal with 15 minutes of regulation time remaining. Irfan Sardar converted a penalty in the 75th minute to make it 5-1.
For Mohun Bagan, the emphatic result represented an ideal response following its previous CFL outing against traditional rival East Bengal. The Kolkata Derby had finished 1-1, leaving the Mariners looking for a victory as they began the decisive Super Six stage.
The result puts Mohun Bagan on a positive footing in a championship round featuring some of Kolkata football’s biggest sides.
East Bengal, Mohammedan SC, Bhawanipore and United SC are the other four clubs competing alongside Mohun Bagan and Coal India in the Super Six.
The six teams will face each other in a round-robin format, with the side finishing at the top of the standings being crowned the Calcutta Football League champion.
With five goals inside the opening half of its first Super Six match, Mohun Bagan has made an emphatic statement as the race for the CFL 2026 title enters its decisive phase.
