Hosts Morocco began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Comoros, highlighted by a stunning overhead kick from substitute Ayoub El Kaabi at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah.
The win extended Morocco’s impressive winning streak to 19 matches and reinforced their status as favourites in Group A.
After a frustrating first half in which Comoros defended resolutely, Morocco finally broke the deadlock 10 minutes after the restart.
Real Madrid forward Brahim Díaz found space in the box and finished confidently in the 55th minute, with Noussair Mazraoui providing the assist to reward the hosts’ growing pressure.
Comoros had earlier threatened to spoil the party when goalkeeper Yannick Pandor saved a first-half penalty from Soufiane Rahimi, producing an excellent stop to keep his side level at the break.
Pandor continued to impress throughout the match, denying several Moroccan efforts with a series of sharp saves.
The defining moment of the game arrived in the 74th minute when El Kaabi produced a moment of brilliance.
Meeting Anass Salah-Eddine’s lofted pass, the striker executed a perfectly timed overhead kick that flew past Pandor, doubling Morocco’s advantage and instantly becoming a leading contender for goal of the tournament.
Morocco’s evening was not without concern, as centre-back Romain Saïss was forced off injured in the first half, while captain Achraf Hakimi was restricted to the bench due to an ankle problem.
Despite those absences, the hosts controlled the closing stages and limited Comoros to a handful of late chances.
The victory gives Morocco a strong start to their home Afcon campaign and puts early pressure on Group A rivals Mali and Zambia.
For Comoros, there were encouraging signs in defeat, particularly from their goalkeeper, but they were ultimately undone by moments of individual quality from the tournament hosts.
Matches will continue on Monday with Mali against Zambia, South Africa facing Angola, and Egypt against Zimbabwe.
