Mumbai City FC, the reigning champions of the Indian Super League (ISL) League Winners Shield, has made a significant move to strengthen their squad by signing Slovakian attacker Jakub Vojtuš. The 30-year-old forward is set to join the Islanders for the remainder of the season, stepping into the shoes of the injured Spaniard Iker Guarrotxena.
Vojtuš, who will be donning the number 9 jersey, is not new to the pressures of high-level football. His career began with a promising stint at MSK Zilina in Slovakia, where he was part of the team that clinched the Slovakian Championship in the 2009/10 season. This early success laid the foundation for a career that would see him attract attention from Italian football powerhouses Inter Milan and Chievo, before making his mark in Poland and Romania.
His recent spell included a notable performance for CFR Cluj, where he made seven appearances in the 2020/21 season, contributing to their Romanian Championship victory. Before joining Mumbai City FC, Vojtuš showcased his talents at ACSM Politehnica Iasi in Romania and has represented his national team in various age groups, highlighting his experience and versatility on the field.
The signing comes at a critical juncture for Mumbai City FC, as they aim to defend their title with only three games left in the league stage. The team currently sits at the top of the ISL points table, with upcoming matches against Hyderabad FC, Odisha FC, and Mohun Bagan Super Giant.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new challenge, Vojtuš remarked, “Playing in India and for Mumbai City is a great opportunity for me, and I am delighted to have joined up with one of the best teams in the ISL. The team has done really well so far being top of the table, and I hope to be able to add to that and score goals and help the team defend the ISL League Shield.”
Petr Kratky, the head coach of Mumbai City FC, shared his excitement about the new addition to the squad, stating, “In Jakub, we have a very good attacking option, who is strong and experienced. He brings a lot of international pedigree with him and will be a big asset to our side. Jakub has demonstrated his abilities at a high level in his career and he will form an important part of our side, and we are excited to have him here in Mumbai City FC.”
With this new signing, Mumbai City FC not only adds depth to their attacking lineup but also brings in a player with a proven track record of success. Vojtuš’s experience and skill set are expected to play a pivotal role in the team’s quest to retain the ISL League Winners Shield and make a deep run in the playoffs. The team and fans alike are eager to see the impact Vojtuš will have on the pitch as the season heads towards its climax.
