Three goals in a ten-minute spell powered Mumbai City FC to a dominant 3-0 victory over Mohammedan SC in an Indian Super League clash at the Mumbai Football Arena on Sunday. The win propelled the Islanders to fifth place in the standings with 27 points from 17 matches.
The Islanders controlled possession from the outset, dictating the tempo of the game, but lacked a clinical edge in the first half despite creating several chances. Bipin Singh played a pivotal role in orchestrating Mumbai’s attacks early on, including a near-perfect pass to Vikram Partap Singh in the box, though the latter skied his effort.
Mohammedan SC showed glimpses of danger on the counter, with Vanlalzuidika Chhakchhuak setting up Franca for a shot that sailed high and wide, giving Mumbai City FC’s backline a brief scare. However, the visitors were largely on the defensive as Mumbai pressed forward relentlessly.
The second half began with the Islanders maintaining their high intensity, as Lallianzuala Chhangte nearly broke the deadlock with a shot that hit the woodwork in the 46th minute. The home team’s persistence finally paid off in the 72nd minute when a long ball from Bipin Singh caused confusion in Mohammedan SC’s defense. Gaurav Bora’s attempted clearance inadvertently ended up in his own net, giving Mumbai a crucial lead.
Bora’s woes compounded six minutes later. Jon Toral threaded a ball to Chhangte on the right flank, and the Mumbai skipper’s attempt took a deflection off Bora, further increasing the hosts’ advantage.
Mumbai sealed the game in the 82nd minute through Thaer Krouma. Chhangte’s cross from the right flank caused chaos in the Mohammedan box, with a poor clearance falling to Krouma, who struck a powerful first-time shot into the net.
The visitors, overwhelmed by Mumbai’s pace and attacking fluidity, were unable to mount any significant response. Chhangte’s energetic display and Mumbai’s collective dominance ensured the team collected three vital points in their playoff push.
