Over the last few years Mumbai City have become a very strong and consistent team in the Indian Super League. While there are many reasons their recruitment of players have been exceptional and one such example is Bipin Singh who joined the club from ATK FC and gradually became a very vital cog for the Islanders.
The Manipuri winger joined the club right before the 2018-19 season and since then he has had a meteoric rise in his career. Starting from scoring occasionally to raking up his first ISL hattrick and then scoring the winning goal against ATK Mohun Bagan in the finals as he guided the Islanders to a historic ISL Double.
Over the years he has become a fan favourite and the love and support that he has got from the club and the fans has made this his new home. “Abhi toh ghar jaise hogaya hai (It’s like a home now). Everyone from the staff, management and teammates have become like a family to me,” Bipin shared in an interview with Football Counter.
This season also he started on a very positive note as he scored the historic goal to be the joint highest top scorer for Mumbai City FC along with former striker Modou Sougou. He is keen to make a stronger mark than last season and outscore himself this time and help the club by stepping up in important moments.
“Last season, I scored 6 goals, and in the season before I had scored six goals too. I had a few assists also in these seasons. My current aim is to increase the tally, score more than six goals for the club and win more matches,” stated Bipin.
The Islanders have brought in several talented players which includes the likes of Greg Stewart, Jorge Pereyra Diaz, Alberto Noguera and have also signed defender Rostyn Griffiths. Overall Des Buckingham has amazing attacking depth and Bipin feels it makes him better as he pushes harder in training to be better than his competition. He feels the healthy competition among the players help the club strive for more.
“It’s a good thing, there should be competitiveness within the team, helps you push harder and not take things lightly. Every player has to give his best in the training to prove his place in the team. This competition helps us to give our 100%; everybody knows the spot in the team is not to be taken for granted. We know we have to work and look for improvement all the time,” the Manipuri winger opined.
The Islanders are third in the ISL standings with nine points from five matches. They recently shared the spoils with ATK Mohun Bagan in a 2-2 draw. However both ATK Mohun Bagan and Chennaiyin who have a game advantage over Mumbai City FC will have a chance to go up in the standings if they win their next match. Interestingly Chennaiyin FC’s next game is against Mumbai City FC on November 12 at the Marina Arena.
