England manager Thomas Tuchel has shed light on his decision to leave Myles Lewis-Skelly and several others out of his latest national squad, citing a lack of game time and recent performances as the main reasons. For Lewis-Skelly, one of Arsenal’s brightest young prospects, this decision marks a turning point not just for his international ambitions but potentially for his club career as well.
The 19-year-old defender, once hailed as one of the most exciting English talents, has struggled for minutes at Arsenal this season, slipping down the pecking order behind Riccardo Calafiori, who has cemented his place as Mikel Arteta’s first-choice left-back. As Tuchel puts it, it’s not about potential anymore, it’s about regular performances and rhythm.
Tuchel’s approach to England’s squad selection has been pragmatic. When addressing reporters, he made it clear that past contributions don’t guarantee future call-ups. “Myles was a very good teammate and played for us in the last camp,” Tuchel said, “but there’s always competition. It’s about performance and consistency.”
Lewis-Skelly’s lack of club minutes was impossible to ignore. While he impressed last season and earned his first senior caps, his reduced involvement this term, just 86 Premier League minutes, has left him short on form and fitness. Tuchel confirmed that the Arsenal youngster was simply outperformed by others in his position, such as Nico O’Reilly, Alex Scott, and Jude Bellingham, who have been getting consistent starts at club level.
“Myles simply needs more starts, more minutes,” Tuchel explained. “When a player like Nico O’Reilly has so many starts in that position, it’s natural that he’s slightly ahead.”
Tuchel’s words carry both warning and encouragement. He left the door open for Lewis-Skelly’s return, but only if he can re-establish himself in Arteta’s plans.
At Arsenal, Mikel Arteta’s squad depth has become both a blessing and a curse for emerging players. While the Gunners’ growing competitiveness in domestic and European competitions has raised standards, it’s also limited opportunities for youth prospects.
Lewis-Skelly has featured more in cup competitions and the Champions League, starting both of Arsenal’s Carabao Cup matches and earning brief substitute appearances in Europe. Yet, with Arsenal competing at the highest level, Arteta has leaned on experienced players in key Premier League fixtures a decision that’s understandable from a tactical standpoint but frustrating for someone in Lewis-Skelly’s situation.
