NorthEast United FC has made a significant addition to their team by signing Moroccan U-23 international Hamza Regragui from Wydad AC. The acquisition, finalized on a one and a half year deal for an undisclosed fee, marks a strategic move by the Highlanders to strengthen their lineup as they aim for glory in the competitive landscape of Indian football.
Regragui, 26, is not new to the challenges and triumphs of professional football. His journey began with Málaga CF’s U-19 team in Spain, followed by a remarkable stint at RS Berkane, where he showcased his versatility and skill over 163 appearances. At Berkane, Regragui’s trophy cabinet grew to include prestigious titles such as the CAF Super Cup, CAF Confederations Cup, and the Moroccan Cup, evidencing his winning mentality and prowess on the field.
In July 2023, Regragui transitioned to Wydad AC, a team that finished as runners-up in the 2022-23 CAF Champions League, further highlighting his experience at the highest levels of African club football. This move to NorthEast United FC not only signifies a new chapter in Regragui’s career but also reunites him with head coach Juan Pedro Benali, under whose guidance he has previously flourished.
Expressing his enthusiasm about joining the Highlanders, Regragui said, “I am truly thrilled to be joining NorthEast United FC and reuniting with Coach Juan Pedro Benali. The vision of the management and the exciting prospect of playing in the Indian Super League were key factors in my decision to make this move.” His ambition and belief in the club’s project underscore the mutual expectations of success and growth.
Coach Benali praised Regragui’s dynamic abilities and his alignment with the team’s values, emphasizing the Moroccan’s potential to contribute significantly to NorthEast United’s ambitions. “Hamza brings a dynamic presence to the team, capable of playing anywhere on the field. His dedication and positive attitude align perfectly with the values we uphold at NorthEast,” Benali remarked.
Mandar Tamhane, CEO of NorthEast United FC, highlighted the club’s targeted approach in acquiring Regragui, noting the six-month period of observation that preceded the signing. Tamhane’s comments reflect the club’s strategic planning and optimism about Regragui’s impact, stating, “He arrives with invaluable experience and adds depth to our squad.
Hamza’s versatility offers a myriad of tactical options, perfectly fitting with our progressive approach to building a robust and competitive team.”
As Regragui joins the squad in Bhubaneswar for the Kalinga Super Cup, his arrival is eagerly anticipated by fans and teammates alike. With his rich background and versatile skill set, Hamza Regragui is poised to make a significant impact at NorthEast United FC, contributing to their pursuit of excellence in the Indian Super League and beyond.
