NorthEast United FC has bolstered its defense by signing Indian defender Sumit Rathi on a free transfer for the remainder of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season. The club announced the move on Tuesday, adding an experienced and versatile player to their squad.
Rathi, 23, is a promising centre-back who can also operate as a left-back, bringing flexibility and depth to NorthEast United’s defensive line. Expressing his excitement about the move, Rathi highlighted the club’s passionate fanbase and vision as key reasons for his decision.
“I’m thrilled to join NorthEast United FC. The club has a rich footballing history and a passionate fanbase, creating an ideal environment for any player. The club’s vision and project resonated with me, and after speaking with the management, I felt this was the right move for my career. I can’t wait to play in front of the incredible NEUFC fans,” Rathi stated.
Rathi began his football journey with the AIFF U-18s before joining Indian Arrows in 2017. His performances caught the attention of ATK, where he made his ISL debut. Following the merger of ATK and Mohun Bagan, he continued with Mohun Bagan Super Giant, winning two ISL Championships, the ISL League Shield, and the prestigious Durand Cup.
Last year, Rathi was given the honour of captaining Mohun Bagan Super Giant in a promotional derby match against East Bengal in Lucknow, underlining his leadership qualities despite his young age.
NorthEast United FC’s head coach, Juan Pedro Benali, believes Rathi’s signing will significantly strengthen the squad. He emphasized the defender’s versatility and technical ability as key attributes.
“Sumit is a talented centre-back who also offers versatility at left-back. His strong left foot and significant experience for his age make him a valuable asset. His ability to play multiple positions is crucial for our squad, and he will undoubtedly strengthen our team,” Benali said.
With Rathi’s arrival, NorthEast United FC aims to solidify its defense as the team pushes for a strong finish in the ISL 2024-25 season. His experience at the highest level of Indian football, coupled with his adaptability, makes him a crucial addition to the squad. Fans will be eager to see how the young defender contributes to the team’s success in the upcoming matches.
