Former World No.1 Jimmy Connors has compared Novak Djokovic with Rafael Nadal. Connors has backed Djokovic to find more success on the tour despite turning 37. The Serbian could not win a Slam title this year as Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner shared two apiece.
However, Djokovic won the elusive Olympic gold at the Paris Games after beating in-form Alcaraz in the final. The Serb is the most successful male player in the history of the sport with 24 Grand Slam titles and Connors expects him to keep going strong.
Djokovic is still at the top of his fitness and he hasn’t been perturbed by any injury concerns.
“He’s (Djokovic) not quite playing at the standard that they’re used to seeing so that gives them a little confidence too. But I also got to say that he’s got the kind of game that I like. Steps into the ball, takes it a little bit early. He’s got a good return, aggressive return,” Connors said on Advantage Connors podcast.
Connors said he is not writing off Djokovic as he has still got the game to find more success at the top level.
“And also, I’m not counting him out ever. He’s got guts. He’s got the game. He’s got the intensity. He’s in shape. He’s like Nadal. He’s not going to go out there unless he is ready to play,” Connors added.
Meanwhile, Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the Six Kings Slam in Riyadh. This was their last meeting as Nadal has announced his retirement and will play for the one final time at the Davis Cup.
Djokovic had a 31-29 record against Nadal and shared an epic rivalry with the Spaniard.
