Paris Saint Germain claimed their first ever UEFA Super Cup after a thrilling comeback and penalty shootout victory over Tottenham Hotspur in Udine.
The French champions, who looked dead and buried with just minutes remaining, fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 before winning 4-3 on spot kicks.
Tottenham, under new manager Thomas Frank, had looked in control for most of the match. Micky van de Ven opened the scoring in the 39th minute with a powerful header, and Cristian Romero doubled the lead early in the second half.
Spurs’ disciplined defending and sharp counterattacks frustrated PSG, who struggled to create clear chances for much of the game.
The turning point came late on when Ousmane Dembele switched to the right wing, stretching Tottenham’s shape and delivering more dangerous balls into the box. In the 85th minute, Lee Kang In pulled one back for PSG with a precise low drive into the bottom corner.
The equaliser arrived deep into stoppage time when Achraf Hakimi found Dembele, whose whipped cross was met by Goncalo Ramos’ diving header past Guglielmo Vicario.
With the score level at full time, the match went straight to penalties. Tottenham started strongly as Dominic Solanke and Rodrigo Bentancur converted, while Vitinha missed for PSG.
However, the momentum shifted when PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier saved from Van de Ven and Mathys Tel fired wide for Spurs. Dembele, Ramos and Nuno Mendes all scored for the Parisians, with Mendes securing the win by smashing his effort into the top corner.
The victory sparked wild celebrations among the PSG players, with captain Marquinhos lifting the trophy as glitter rained down. It marks another addition to their growing list of honours under Luis Enrique, who praised his team’s resilience and ability to turn games around under pressure.
For Tottenham, the defeat was a bitter pill to swallow after leading for so long. Frank acknowledged the disappointment but took pride in his side’s performance, pointing to the positives ahead of the new season. Spurs fans, who had travelled in large numbers, applauded their team at the final whistle despite the heartbreak.
This Super Cup win cements PSG’s status as Europe’s dominant force in 2025, while offering Spurs a glimpse of the level they must reach to challenge for top honours.
