A heated Indian Super League clash between Kerala Blasters and Bengaluru FC on Sunday was overshadowed by allegations of racial abuse directed at defender Fallou Ndiaye, sparking outrage and calls for strict action.
The match itself marked a significant moment for Kerala Blasters, who secured their first win of the ISL season. Goals from Victor Bertomeu and Franchu sealed a memorable victory against their arch-rivals, ending Bengaluru FC’s unbeaten derby run that stretched back to September 2023. However, the celebrations were quickly dampened by disturbing scenes that unfolded during the game.
Ndiaye, a Senegalese defender, was reportedly subjected to racist chants from the stands. Videos circulating widely on social media appear to capture the incident, drawing condemnation from fans and officials alike. The player, visibly affected during the match, became the center of a controversy that has once again highlighted the issue of racism in Indian football.
Kerala Blasters responded swiftly with a strong statement condemning the abuse. “The Club has taken note of an appalling incident… where one of our players was subjected to blatant racist chants,” the statement read. The club confirmed that it has formally raised the issue with the All India Football Federation and ISL authorities, vowing to pursue appropriate action.
“There is no place for racism in our game,” the statement added, reinforcing the club’s stance on maintaining respect and inclusivity in football.
Bengaluru FC also issued a firm response, condemning the incident and pledging cooperation with authorities to identify those responsible. “Racism is unacceptable… and runs completely counter to the values the club stands for,” the club said, signaling unity in addressing the issue despite the rivalry.
This is not the first time controversy has clouded fixtures between these two sides. In the 2023–24 season opener, Bengaluru FC forward Ryan Williams was accused of making a racist gesture towards Kerala Blasters defender Aibanbha Dohling, prompting an official complaint to the AIFF.
Sunday’s incident has once again put the spotlight on racism in Indian football, raising urgent questions about fan behavior and stadium accountability. While Kerala Blasters celebrate a long-awaited win, the focus now shifts to how swiftly and effectively authorities respond to ensure such incidents are not repeated.
