Arsenal are tracking Real Madrid teenager Victor Valdepenas as a long-term defensive target, with the Premier League club prepared to wait until 2026 to make a potential move.
The 19-year-old is highly rated by Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta, though Arsenal face competition from Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen.
Valdepenas recently made his senior debut for Real Madrid in a La Liga match against Alaves, handed the opportunity by head coach Xabi Alonso amid injuries and suspensions in Madrid’s defence.
The appearance came at a tense moment for the club, with Alonso under pressure following a poor run of results, before a narrow victory eased immediate concerns.
Deployed at left-back despite being more familiar with a central role, Valdepenas delivered a composed and disciplined performance.
Alonso praised the teenager’s maturity and competitiveness, while the player admitted to pre-match nerves but credited his team-mates for helping him settle into the occasion.
Despite that breakthrough, Arsenal believe regular first-team opportunities at the Santiago Bernabeu may be limited in the coming years.
Reports suggest Berta is already exploring the framework of a future offer, with the Gunners confident they can present a clearer pathway to consistent top-level football.
Valdepenas is under contract with Real Madrid until the summer of 2029, placing the Spanish champions in a strong negotiating position.
However, interest from Dortmund and Leverkusen adds another layer of complexity, with Bundesliga clubs known for providing young players with prominent developmental roles.
The defender’s versatility is central to Arsenal’s interest. Arteta has consistently favoured adaptable defenders capable of operating across the back line, and Valdepenas’ comfort both centrally and out wide fits that profile.
While Real Madrid remain firmly in control for now, Arsenal’s pursuit is expected to remain active as the player’s career continues to develop.
Real Madrid may be forced to offload some youngsters who have not enjoyed playing time under Xabi Alonso.
