Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim admitted they might be the worst United team in the club’s history after suffering a 1-3 defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Red Devils failed to take a solitary shot on target in open play as the visitors dominated the contest from the get-go despite almost equal possession.
Yankuba Minteh scored early in the fifth minute but the hosts equalized as their captain Bruno Fernandes scored from a spot kick in the 23rd minute. After the first half, Kaoru Mitoma scored in the 60th minute whereas Georginino Rutter put the game to bed as he capitalized on a howler from Andre Onana.
This was Amorim’s fourth home loss since he took over the baton from Erik Ten Hag in November.
“We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach,” Amorim said. “I have full knowledge of that. I am not going to change, no matter what.
“I know we can succeed but we need to survive this moment. I am not naive. We need to survive now. We are the worst team, maybe, in the history of Manchester United.
“I know you want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go: your headlines.”
The Portuguese manager has suffered seven losses in 15 games and the gaffer said that the players are underperforming irrespective of the situation.
“Everybody here is underperforming, no matter what the circumstances, we are underperforming and have to accept that,” Amorim said.
“It’s unacceptable to lose so many games. For any Premier League club, imagine Manchester United. So it’s a really hard moment but we have to continue, we have to continue, there is no other way. We need to suffer and continue.”
