Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim said they deserved to win against Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. After a goalless first half, United captain Bruno Fernandes scored the opening goal of the game.
However, the Red Devils were reduced to 10-man after Diogo Dalot received a second yellow card in the 61st minute for a bad foul on Mikel Merino. The Gunners were quick to capitalize on the advantage with Brazilian centre-back Gabriel Magalhães scoring two minutes later.
The visitors got the win as they won 5-3 on penalties with Joshua Zirkzee, Lisandro Martinez, Bruno Fernandes, Leny Yoro, and Amad Diallo all scoring from the spot kick.
“Thankfully the players were there, they fought,” Amorim said. “Sometimes what we talk about before the match is not tactical or technical, it’s this. We have to compete no matter what, no matter what the situation we competed today.
“We deserved to win, Arsenal didn’t deserve to lose but we deserved to win. The way we played, the way we fought was really tough since the beginning. We didn’t have the ball too much but we had control without the ball.”
Meanwhile, United’s forward Marcus Rashford was once again absent from the matchday squad. The Portuguese revealed that he isn’t sure if Rashford would ever be seen in a United shirt.
Amorim said, “I don’t know. We’ll see. He is a player for Manchester United. We’ll see. He has to work.
“He has to represent his club and he loves his club but I have to make choices. I already spoke about how I make the choices. It is what it is. Let’s continue, let’s see the next game and like I said I have to make a selection.”
According to reports, Rashford has received interest from AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund. Manchester United will next take on Southampton on Thursday night at Old Trafford.
