Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has put his weight behind manager Ruben Amorim. Ratcliffe reckons the Portuguese manager is doing a good job with the players he has got at the club.
United is struggling at 14th place in the Premier League standings with nine wins, seven draws, 12 losses, and a total of 34 points. The Red Devils played a 1-1 draw against second-placed Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Amorim has won 11 out of his 26 games in charge after he took the coaching baton from Erik Ten Hag, who was sacked in late October 2024.
“If I actually look at the squad which is available to Ruben, I think he is doing a really good job to be honest,” Ratcliffe said in an interview with the BBC. “I think Ruben is an outstanding young manager. I really do. He’s an excellent manager and I think he will be there for a long time.”
The co-owner feels it will take time to build a potent squad at Manchester United as currently, some players are not good enough whereas some others are overpaid.
“Some are not good enough and some probably are overpaid, but for us to mold the squad that we are fully responsible for, and accountable for, will take time,” he said. “We’ve got this period of transformation where we move from the past to the future.”
The 72-year-old also revealed the reasons behind the ticket price hike.
“We are in the process of change and it’s an uncomfortable period and disruptive and I do feel sympathy with the fans,” said Ratcliffe. “The simple answer is the club runs out of money at Christmas if we don’t do those things.”
Manchester United will next take on Real Sociedad on Thursday in the Europa League.
