East Bengal FC have confirmed a significant boost to their squad stability, announcing that seasoned midfielder Souvik Chakrabarti has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2026-27 season.
The 32-year-old, who joined the Red & Gold Brigade from Hyderabad FC in 2022, has been a consistent presence in midfield and a crucial member of the team’s leadership core. Since donning East Bengal colours, Souvik has made 65 top-flight appearances and accumulated 4,601 minutes on the pitch, contributing a goal and an assist along the way.
In the 2024-25 season alone, Souvik featured in 28 matches across all competitions, logging over 2,149 minutes. His lone goal for the club came in emphatic style during a 4-0 thrashing of Bashundhara Kings in the AFC Challenge League group stage in Thimphu.
A reliable performer in the Indian Super League (ISL) last season, Souvik recorded 66 recoveries, 21 clearances, 19 interceptions, 44 successful duels, and 12 successful aerial duels across 1,560 minutes in 20 matches. His 78% passing accuracy underscores his composure and effectiveness in midfield.
East Bengal’s Head of Football, Thangboi Singto, praised the veteran’s influence, stating: “We are pleased to extend Souvik’s contract for another two seasons. A prime example of versatility and perseverance, he is a son of the soil who embodies the core values of East Bengal. He is a great professional and the youngsters can learn a lot from him.”
Head Coach Oscar Bruzon echoed the sentiment, highlighting Souvik’s impact beyond statistics. “Souvik’s extension is not just about retaining a top talent; it’s also about honouring the heart, soul and relentless dedication that define our team’s identity. His professionalism is a benchmark for any young player who aims to solidify his place in the team.”
An emotional and proud Souvik expressed his gratitude and excitement for the future: “It has been a matter of great pride to represent this iconic club over the past three seasons. I have won the Super Cup with East Bengal and experienced many wonderful memories. I will try to perform even better over the next two seasons and as a senior player, inspire the youngsters to bring more success to the club. Joy East Bengal!”
The extension not only strengthens East Bengal’s midfield but also reinforces the club’s commitment to retaining experienced leaders as they aim for more success in upcoming campaigns.
