Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Mykhailo Mudryk on loan, giving the Ukrainian winger an opportunity to reunite with Roberto De Zerbi in North London.
The agreement is structured as a paid loan and includes an option for Tottenham to buy Mudryk permanently, according to Fabrizio Romano. The purchase clause is not mandatory, meaning Spurs will be able to evaluate the winger before deciding whether to keep him beyond the 2026-27 season.
Mudryk has also agreed personal terms with Tottenham after making Spurs his preferred destination. Earlier Monday, he had placed interest from Leeds United and other potential moves on hold because of his desire to work with De Zerbi again.
The transfer comes shortly before the Premier League summer window closes at 11 p.m. UK time on Sept. 1.
Mudryk Reunites With Roberto De Zerbi
De Zerbi’s presence is a significant part of the move.
The Tottenham manager previously coached Mudryk at Shakhtar Donetsk, where the winger developed into one of Europe’s most highly regarded young attacking players. De Zerbi has maintained a strong relationship with Mudryk and has previously described him as being like another son to him.
Mudryk eventually left Shakhtar for Chelsea in January 2023 in a transfer worth up to £88.5 million. However, his time at Stamford Bridge never developed as Chelsea initially hoped.
The 25-year-old has also endured a lengthy absence from competitive football after being suspended following an adverse doping test.
Mudryk was cleared to resume his career this summer after his ban was rescinded. He subsequently returned to action for Chelsea during preseason, making his first appearance for the club since November 2024 when he came off the bench against Juventus in Hong Kong.
Chelsea were prepared to allow him to leave on loan to obtain regular first-team football, creating the opportunity for Tottenham to make their late move.
Tottenham Add Another Attacking Option
Mudryk becomes another significant addition to an attack that De Zerbi has reshaped during the summer.
Tottenham have already added Savio and Omar Marmoush, with the latter joining from Manchester City on a season-long loan containing an obligation to buy for a reported £50 million plus £10 million in potential add-ons.
De Zerbi had publicly indicated that he wanted another signing before the window closed, and Tottenham moved for Mudryk after their pursuit of Iliman Ndiaye became complicated by Manchester City’s intervention.
Mudryk gives De Zerbi another natural option on the left side. His acceleration and ability to carry the ball at speed can provide a direct threat, while his familiarity with the coach’s demands should help him adapt to Tottenham’s system.
The move also represents an opportunity for Mudryk to restart a career that has been interrupted for a significant period.
Tottenham are not committing themselves to a permanent transfer immediately. Instead, the optional purchase clause gives Spurs the opportunity to determine whether De Zerbi can once again bring the best out of a player he knows particularly well.
For Mudryk, the move provides regular Premier League football and a reunion with the coach who played an important role in his development before his move to Chelsea.
