FIFA World Cup 2022: We will give respect but I’m not going to roll out a red carpet for him to score – Kyle Walker on facing Kylian Mbappe

England’s full-back Kyle Walker is going to be imperative for the Three Lions in their big quarterfinal clash of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022 against France. The Manchester City player will have the responsibility to keep Kylian Mbappe at bay.

Mbappe has been simply magnificent for Les Bleus as he has scored five goals (the most so far in the tournament) in four matches and he has played an instrumental role in the success of the team. The star striker had scored a brace in the Round of 16 match against Poland in the team’s 3-1 win.

The PSG Saint Germain forward has got the speed and Walker will need to be at his best to put the brakes on him.

“I know he’s a top player but we’re not playing tennis. It’s not a solo sport, it’s a team game,” the Manchester City defender said on Wednesday.

“We know he’s a great player and that’s why he’s the focus of all questions. But let’s not forget (Olivier) Giroud, who has scored countless (goals), (Ousmane) Dembele, for me just as good on the other wing.”

Walker added England’s primary focus is not on Mbappe and they are aware that other French players could be equally devastating for their team.

“When we played Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, we were not just thinking of Mbappe and it’s going to be the same on Saturday,” he said.

“Yes, he’s a tool in their armory — and a very good one — but you can’t underestimate their other players.”

Walker, who himself has lightning-quick speed, added it’s not England vs Mbappe but it’s England vs France. The defender added collective effort of the team is going to be crucial.

“This game isn’t England v Mbappe, it’s England vs France,” he said.

“We will give respect but I’m not going to roll out a red carpet for him to score. It’s do-or-die as if we lose we go home,” added the 32-year-old.
“I do understand what I need to do and that’s to stop him. It’s probably easier said than done but I don’t underestimate myself.

“I’ve come across great players before so I will just treat it like another game.”
