A strong attacking display, led by early goals from Arshdeep Singh and PB Sunil, ensured India remained in control for most of the contest.
India began with high intensity, and it took just two minutes to find the opening goal. Arshdeep capitalized on a defensive lapse by New Zealand, driving into the circle from the right flank before taking a shot that was initially saved by the goalkeeper. He reacted quickly to slot home the rebound, giving India an ideal start.
The momentum continued as India doubled its lead in the final minute of the first quarter. A clever penalty corner variation saw captain Rohit pass the ball to Sunil, who unleashed a low snapshot that sneaked past the New Zealand defence. It was India’s fourth penalty corner of the quarter, and Sunil’s precision ensured the Men in Blue went into the first break 2-0 up.
In the second quarter, India displayed composed, structured hockey, combining well in midfield and maintaining pressure inside New Zealand’s circle. The relentless effort paid off in the 26th minute when Araijeet Singh Hundal, unmarked near the goalmouth, turned swiftly and struck cleanly to make it 3-0.
New Zealand, however, found a lifeline in the third quarter. Gus Nelson converted in the 41st minute, cutting India’s lead to 3-1 and briefly shifting momentum. But India quickly restored control as Roman Kumur scored through a penalty corner in the 47th minute, reestablishing a three-goal cushion at 4-1.
The Kiwis refused to back down, with Aidan Max pulling one back in the 52nd minute, sparking a tense finale. Despite sustained pressure from New Zealand, the Indian defence, marshaled well by the backline and goalkeeper, stood firm to protect the lead.
This victory follows India’s thrilling 3-2 win over Great Britain in its opening match, keeping them top of the standings and brimming with confidence ahead of the next challenge.
The Indian colts will next face arch-rival Pakistan on Tuesday, a match that promises to test their form and resilience as they aim to extend their unbeaten streak in Johor Bahru.
