Indian Women’s Hockey Team Clinches Junior Asia Cup with Thrilling Penalty Shootout Victory

The Indian women’s hockey team successfully defended its title at the Women’s Junior Asia Cup by defeating China 3-2 in a nail-biting penalty shootout on Sunday. The victory secures their position as one of Asia’s top junior hockey powerhouses.

The match, held at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, saw both sides locked in an intense battle. China opened the scoring late in the second quarter when Jinzhuang Tan converted a penalty stroke in the 30th minute.

However, India responded brilliantly in the third quarter. A clinical build-up from Sunelita Toppo and Deepika set up Kanika Siwach, who equalized with a well-taken field goal in the 41st minute.

The final quarter was an exhibition of skill and determination as both teams pushed for a winner. Despite multiple opportunities, including penalty corners for both sides, the game remained tied at 1-1, forcing a penalty shootout to decide the champion.

India held its nerve in the shootout, with Sakshi Rana, Ishika, and Sunelita converting their chances. The star of the shootout was Indian goalkeeper Nidhi, who made three decisive saves against Lihang Wang, Jingyi Li, and Dandan Zuo, sealing a memorable win for India.

Hockey India lauded the team’s effort and announced rewards of Rs 2 lakh for each player and Rs 1 lakh for each support staff member.

Speaking on the achievement, a Hockey India official said, “This victory is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players and coaching staff. The future of Indian hockey looks brighter than ever.”

The match began with both teams evenly matched in the first quarter, creating chances but failing to capitalize. India dominated possession in the second quarter but was caught off guard when China gained a late penalty stroke.

The third quarter saw a rejuvenated Indian team, with Deepika orchestrating attacks that eventually led to Kanika’s equalizer.

In the shootout, India displayed remarkable composure under pressure. Reflecting on her performance, goalkeeper Nidhi said, “I was focused on staying calm and reading the opponents’ moves. It’s a team effort, and I’m proud of what we achieved together.”

This win marks another milestone for Indian hockey and serves as an inspiration for the nation’s young athletes. The team’s success shows the strength and promise of India’s grassroots hockey programs, ensuring that the legacy of the sport continues to thrive.
