PR Sreejesh Withdraws from Hockey India League Auction, Marks End of Playing Career

Former Indian hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh has officially stepped away from the Hockey India League (HIL) 2024 Player Auction, effectively marking the conclusion of his illustrious playing career. Sreejesh, who recently retired from international hockey, has now decided to focus on coaching and mentoring, a role he is excited to embrace as part of his ongoing commitment to Indian hockey.

Speaking to Sportstar, Sreejesh expressed his gratitude for the support he has received throughout his career and explained his decision to retire fully from playing. “I have achieved everything I ever dreamt of as a player, and it will be unfair for me to continue playing now, blocking perhaps a talented youngster’s spot,” he said.

Widely regarded as one of India’s finest goalkeepers, Sreejesh played a pivotal role in India’s success at several international tournaments, including back-to-back podium finishes at the Olympics. His decision comes after thoughtful consideration, acknowledging the importance of allowing the next generation to step up.

As he steps off the field, Sreejesh’s focus shifts to a mentorship role. He is set to coach India’s junior men’s hockey team, a position awaiting approval from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Ministry of Sports. Additionally, he will also serve as the Brand Ambassador for a Hockey India League team.

Reflecting on his career, Sreejesh shared that the emotional memories from his playing days, including his Olympic success, are precious to him. “Bowing down to the goalpost after the win over Spain and celebrating with my teammates was special. Returning to the turf for ‘One Last Dance’ does not feel right now,” he said.

Sreejesh is confident that the revival of the HIL will serve as a vital platform for nurturing future Indian stars, much like it did in its previous editions. His new role will span three years, ensuring that his vast experience will continue to benefit Indian hockey.

Sreejesh’s transition from player to mentor represents the start of an exciting new chapter for both him and the sport in India.
