India’s boxing campaign at the Asian Boxing Championships 2026 in Mongolia got off to a flying start, with Preeti Pawar and Deepak securing crucial wins against strong opponents on Monday.
Competing in the women’s 54kg category, Preeti delivered a dominant and composed performance to defeat Kazakhstan’s Elina Bazarova by a unanimous 5-0 decision. The bout was seen as an early test, given Bazarova’s credentials as a former Asian Under-22 champion. However, Preeti controlled the fight with precision and confidence, underlining her pedigree as a gold medallist at the World Boxing Cup Finals.
In the men’s 70kg division, Deepak faced a stern challenge against Uzbekistan’s Khavasbek Asadullaev, representing a nation known for its boxing dominance. In a tightly contested bout, Deepak showcased tactical awareness and resilience to edge out his opponent with a narrow 3-2 split decision victory.
The two wins ensured a flawless start for the Indian contingent in the opening phase of the tournament, boosting confidence ahead of tougher challenges in the knockout rounds.
Looking ahead, Preeti will face Mongolia’s Enkhjargal Munguntsetseg in the quarterfinals, a bout that is expected to test her adaptability against local support. Meanwhile, Deepak is set to take on Jordan’s Zeyad Eashash in the last-eight stage.
With both boxers displaying strong form and composure under pressure, India has laid down an early marker in the competition, signalling its intent to challenge for top honours at the continental event.
