Indian Contingent Shines at World Armwrestling Championships, Bags 15 Medals in Moldova

In a remarkable performance at the World Armwrestling Championships held in Chisinau, Moldova, the Indian armwrestling team secured an impressive haul of 15 medals. The championships, which took place from August 15-25, saw India’s best armwrestlers compete under the banner of the People’s Armwrestling Federation of India, led by President Preeti Jhangiani. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Indian armwrestling on the global stage.

Adding to the momentous occasion was a historic first for India—Arunachal Pradesh’s Ibi Lollen became the first Indian woman to officiate as a referee in the World Armwrestling Championships. Lollen’s participation as a referee not only highlights the growing presence of Indian athletes in international armwrestling but also signifies the increasing involvement of women in the sport in diverse roles.

The Indian contingent’s success at the championships was spearheaded by standout performances across various categories, with athletes demonstrating exceptional skill and determination.

Starina Jasain excelled in the 60kg Grand Master category, where she claimed a Silver medal in the left-hand category and added a Bronze in the right-hand category. Her dual podium finishes underscored her consistent form and competitiveness throughout the tournament.

Similarly, Alphy Vargese made a significant impact in the Grand Master division, returning with a Silver in the left-hand category and a Bronze in the right-hand category. Vargese’s ability to secure medals in both categories showed her versatility and strength.

In the 80kg Grand Master category, Mihsngewbha Rymbai displayed remarkable grit, earning Silver medals in both the left-hand and right-hand categories. Rymbai’s double silver haul highlighted her resilience and dedication, as she battled through tough competition to reach the podium.

Another notable performance came from Margaret Pathaw, who competed in the 60kg Master category. Pathaw finished her campaign with a Silver in the right-hand category and a Bronze in the left-hand category, rounding off a successful tournament for the Indian team in the senior divisions.

The Indian team’s success extended to the youth categories, where emerging talents showed they are ready to carry the torch forward. Senebi Syngkli made a strong impression in the Youth Women 55kg category, earning two Bronze medals in the left-hand and right-hand events. Syngkli’s podium finishes indicate a promising future for Indian armwrestling, with young athletes making their mark on the international stage.

The Indian contingent’s performance at the World Armwrestling Championships is a testament to the growing strength and depth of the sport in the country. The 15-medal haul, including several multi-medal performances, reflects the dedication and hard work of the athletes and the effective leadership of the People’s Armwrestling Federation of India.

President Preeti Jhangiani’s leadership has been instrumental in promoting the sport and supporting Indian athletes on the international stage. The federation’s efforts have not only produced top-tier competitors but have also paved the way for greater inclusion, as evidenced by Ibi Lollen’s historic role as a referee.

As Indian armwrestling continues to grow, the success in Moldova will undoubtedly serve as an inspiration for future generations of athletes. With such strong performances, the country is poised to become a formidable force in the global armwrestling community. The achievements at the World Armwrestling Championships mark a significant chapter in Indian sports, one that promises even greater accomplishments in the years to come.
