India’s Olympic Journey: Swapnil Kusale Shines Amid Disappointment at Paris 2024

On Thursday, August 1, at the Paris Olympics 2024, Swapnil Kusale emerged as a beacon of hope for India, capturing a bronze medal in the 50m Rifle 3 Positions event.

This achievement marked a significant moment as he became the first Indian to earn a medal in this category, adding to the country’s total tally of three shooting medals. His outstanding performance provided a silver lining on an otherwise challenging day for Indian athletes across various events.

Kusale delivered a remarkable performance in the men’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions final, scoring 451.4 points to secure the bronze medal.

In the women’s 50m Rifle 3P event, however, Indian shooters Sift Kaur Samra and Anjum Moudgil faced setbacks, failing to advance past the qualification round. Samra finished in 31st place with a total score of 575-22x, while Moudgil placed 18th with 584-26x. Despite their efforts, they were unable to progress further in the competition.

In athletics, India’s hopes in the race walk events did not yield medals. In the men’s 20km race walk final, Vikash Singh and Paramjeet Singh finished 30th and 37th, with timings of 1:22:36 and 1:23:36, respectively. Priyanka Goswami, competing in the women’s 20km race walk final, completed the event in 41st place with a timing of 1:39:55. Despite their determination, the athletes could not secure podium finishes.

The badminton court witnessed mixed fortunes for Indian players. Lakshya Sen emerged victorious in the men’s singles Round of 16, defeating compatriot HS Prannoy with a commanding score of 21-12, 21-6, advancing to the quarterfinals. In contrast, PV Sindhu’s campaign in the women’s singles came to an end as she lost to China’s He Bing Jiao 19-21, 14-21.

In men’s doubles, the pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty faced a tough challenge against Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik from Malaysia. Despite a strong start, they lost 21-13, 14-21, 16-21 in a closely contested quarterfinal match.

In golf, India’s Shubhankar Sharma and Gaganjeet Bhullar began their campaigns in the men’s individual stroke play. Sharma ended Round 1 in T29 position, while Bhullar was in T56. The golfers aim to improve their standings in the upcoming rounds.

The Indian men’s hockey team faced a narrow defeat against Belgium in Pool B, losing 1-2. Despite putting up a resilient fight, India was unable to overcome the reigning world champions.

In boxing, Nikhat Zareen’s journey in the women’s flyweight 50kg category ended in the Round of 16 after a loss to Wu Yu of China.

Indian archer Pravin Jadhav faced a tough opponent in the men’s recurve individual event, finishing 39th after losing 6-0 to Kao Wenchao in the round of 64.

In sailing, Vishnu Saravanan and Nethra Kumanan participated in the Dinghy ILCA 7 races. Saravanan ended the day in 25th place after the second race, while Kumanan showed promise by securing the 6th position in the women’s category after the first race.

Swapnil Kusale’s bronze medal provided a glimmer of hope for India on a challenging day at the Paris Olympics 2024. While several athletes and teams faced setbacks, Kusale’s success in shooting highlighted the potential for future achievements. As the Olympics continue, Indian athletes remain focused on their quest for excellence and will look to build on this momentum in their upcoming events.
